Dancing in the dark (This guns for hire)

A single frame from Angela and Gareth’s engagement session in good ol’ Calgary.  As short as our summer’s are here, when the sun goes down, and the clouds just start to gather, we can make some pretty sweet engagement photos from that.

“This gun’s for hire even if we’re just dancing in the dark” ~Bruce Springsteen (And Gareth said that too I think)

Courtney & Steve: engagement photographs in downtown Calgary

Courtney and Steve are swearing fealty (I’ve been watching and reading too much Game of Thrones) to one another this upcoming weekend.  We made some pretty pictures of these pretty people.  Then I posted them here to show them off and make them famous.  Thank you for making the engagement session so much fun for me and allowing me to walk you all over downtown Calgary just to get “the shot”.    You two are incredibly fun, happy, and clearly in love (awwwwwww).  I’m doing jumping jacks to get ready for your awesome wedding day!  We’re gonna make awesome happen!  Now tell me, aren’t you glad you found the time out of your ridonkulously crazy schedules and spend a couple of hours for your engagement photos?  The correct answer is yes.

Note: This isn’t how I normally edited images, but I wanted to play around with some new editing presets.  Explanation at the end of the beautiful images of beautiful people (aka Courtney and Steve’s engagement photos).  I’ll be providing you two with two sets of images.  One set will look like the below, and the other set will be with my natural edits.

For Photographers: This was the first time that I decided to give the much talked about VSCO film presets a try.  I’ve had them since they first came out but never used them before as I just didn’t think it was going to be “my style” (yes, I buy things that I don’t use).  So a few months pass by and they start to go rotten (as far as rotten LR presets go).  Anyways, I’ve finally forced myself to give them a try and I gave them a run straight out of the box.  No changes to the presets at all, just click-and-go.  And frankly, I hated it.  My images looked muddy and the blacks and shadows looked like they were being crushed under the foot of a giant.  I couldn’t imagine using them straight out of the box, but that’s ok as I don’t think the intention is to use them like that…I mean, how many people would have the exact same processed images if they did?  That’s just silly (!).  So instead, I played around with the color settings, adjust the blacks, shadows, highlights and and whites until I got something that I felt more comfortable with.  Now, these images still produced the film feel as intended so I’ve stayed true to the intent of the presets and the folks over at VSCO.  I’ve just “cleaned” it up to be more my taste.  I’m not sure if this will be the last time I use the presets, but I definitely want to stay true to my own way of editing, which is what my clients expect from me.  Although I’m happy enough with the results of using VSCO with my changes applied to the images, I won’t be relying on these 100% for my wedding photos and engagement photos going forward.  For that, I’ll rely on my own presets that I’ve put together.  But here’s my biggest beef with using VSCO presets…it’s that everyone and their dogs dogs dogs dog is now using them.  It’s hard to come across a photographers website these days where there isn’t a VSCO preset that has been applied to it.  What you get a bunch of images edited the same way.   The tools that are provided are fantastic, but when we all start to look the same…well, you know the saying.  I guess I should also disclose that there are a few images up there that aren’t VSCO edited.  It was hard for me to rely solely on the presets themselves for an entire session.

Tara & Johnnie: Acreage Engagement Photos

So this is what it’s like to shoot an engagement session on 30 acres of pristine Alberta land!  Damn, that was a fun time!  Tara and Johnnie are lucky I came back on their ATV as I went scouting the open fields and ponds and buildings and shacks and sheds, and clubhouse and moto-cross hills and…and you get the picture.  There was no end to the awesome terrain and landscape we could be taking pictures against.

Tara was a crazy trooper walking everywhere I wanted us to go, all while being pregnant!  No complaints, or tiredness, just straight-up “lets do it!” attitude!  Let’s see what we can do next month for your wedding eh? ;)

Thanks for being so rad with me on the session, hope you enjoy these photos and I’m looking forward to your big day!

Johnnie started cutting away at this crazy looking bonzai-wanna-be spruce tree during the session.  I thought it looked sweet and I wanted to use it, so he decided it needed to be manscaped…wait, that means something entirely different doesn’t it.  Tara and her daughter looked on as he fired up the ol’ chainsaw and proceeded to landscape.  Tara’s expression is priceless! “ok John, stop..stop…stop…stop…we’re taking pictures, not cutting trees.  WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! BUZZZZZZZZZ!!!!! Stop…stop…stop.  Ok I’m done.”

At least we know where we’ll be taking some of your wedding photos.
