My favourite image from New York

As the blog title says, this is my absolute favourite image I took while in New York City recently. Nothing fancy, nothing mind blowing, but full of meaning. I love every bit of this image, and the person in this image.  I love the simplicity and the smile on her face.  Sunday morning brunch at Hell’s Kitchen

Taken with my iPhone 3GS – but who cares, its the image that counts ;)

Julia & Greg: single frame, NYC, NYC food, NYC sickness

I’m blogging from New York City!  I’m ever so quickly falling in love with this amazing city.  I’ve only been here 2.5 days yet feel like I’ve gained a world of culture already.  It’s funny how many ethnic swear words you learn when riding in a cab!  Just kidding (sorta) – by culture I’m of course talking about the food.  The food here is sickingly good.  I mean, I want to eat so much of it that I’d get sick.  It’s rather sick that I want to get sick on the sick food here.  I owe it to my friend Julia Newman who is a sick wedding photographer here in NYC (her studio is in Brooklyn which is one of the sickest boroughs).  She’s letting me crash at her pad while she graciously hosts me and my “I’m gonna use your couch as my closet” ways.   She’s shown me the ways of the foodie.  Anyways, enough food chatter – I’m out here for a number of reasons which include shooting a wedding with her and photographing at least one beautiful family (and hopefully one more! *hint hint Amanda Picone) as well as taking a photography workshop – always looking for ways to improve my work!

Anyways, I’m rambling on like only a photographer can – here now is a sneaky peeky from the wedding I photographed last weekend at the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club.  I’ll be back soon to blog about something else sometime soon!

The Personal Fitness Journey

A couple of months ago I blogged about getting back on the bus.  Getting back into shape has always been an idea that had consumed me.  I used to be in great shape (as Terra can attest to when we first started dating). Then I let it all go. See ya later dumb bells. Sayonara leg press. Arrivaderci any need for workout related gear.  Buh-”I feel physically fantastic”-Bye.

After that post, I really put myself to the test and hired a personal trainer, Amy, at World Health.  If Amy is reading this, I gotsta apologize because at first I had some serious doubts.  She’s 5’2″ and easily the tiniest trainer at the gym.  SHE was gonna motivate ME?!  If I slack off, what’s she gonna do? Punch me in the ankles?   Yell at me with that 5’2″ voice?  What if the bar gets too heavy and I need a spot; is she gonna lift it off my chest?  Why yes. Yes she is. With one hand in fact.  D’oh!

So here I am, 3 months later and I have never ever ever felt better than I do now.  My energy levels are through the roof, I no longer fight the urge for afternoon naps, caffeine is no longer a requirement (replaced by the buzz of adrenaline).  And the much feared “wedding hangover”?  Haven’t had one in 2 months!  Gone!  I can still wake up the next morning and feel like it’s just another Sunday.  Overall, I feel fantastic.

So lets run the numbers…

My fitness stats on May 12, 2011:

Weight: 179lbs
Bio Impedance: 459
Right Thigh (circumference): 52cm
Chest: 100cm
Abdomen: 87cm

Lean Body Mass: 150.05lbs
Percentage of LBM: 83.8%

Percentage of Body Fat: 16.2% (Yikes!!!)

In my previous blog post I had set out personal goals that I wanted to achieve, which I thought would be reasonable to achieve without disappointing myself.  The goals I had were: “These goals are to reduce my body fat % down to 12% and to gain 10lbs of lean muscle.  I have a 3 month timeline to achieve this goal – which makes it just in time for the big wedding season rush.  And in-line with this goal, I’m expecting this to make me much more nimble and even more energetic for all the beautiful weddings that I’m lucky to have been commissioned to photograph. “

With that said, here are my stats as of August 25, 2011:

Weight 181lbs – I was never worried about this number. I was and am perfectly happy that this number is static, in fact, I’ve actually gained 2lbs.  Damn you Alley Burger!
Bio Impedance: 386 (woohoo!!)
Right Thigh (circumference): 57cm (this gain is huge for my considering my prior knee problems.  My jeans also fit tighter around my thighs which is kinda uncomfortable #firstworldpains right?)
Chest: 98cm (No idea how I lost 2cm as I’m definitely benching more than I was when I started.  My trainer attributes this possibly to fat loss around my back).
Abdomen: 86cm (I bet this loss would be much more significant if Calgary didn’t roll out the food trucks.  I’m pretty much not accepting responsibility on this one).

Lean Body Mass: 160.94lbs
Percentage of LBM: 88.9%

Percentage of Body Fat: 11.1%

As I type this, I’m still staring at the numbers.  Did I really exceed my goals!!?? I reduced my body fat % down to 11.1% exceeding my goal by 0.9% and I gained a total 10.89 lbs of lean muscle (a 5.9% gain).  I’m completely freakin’ ECSTATIC!!!

I’m still not ready to post before/after photos but I know that the more I post, the more accountable I become – so one day perhaps I’ll do that.  Or I’ll photoshop my face onto some ripped dudes body, because that’s what photoshop is for anyways. This fitness journey has started off much better than I had hoped.  I truly expected that my goals would be very difficult to reach in such a short time.  But I put in a lot of blood, sweat and swear words to get to this mile marker and I have only my trainer, publicly visible blog posts and my stubborness to thank.

So now what?  I guess I need some new goals, so here it is:

Target LBM: 166lbs
Target Body Fat: 9%

These goals are certainly more moderate and far less aggressive than before, but only because I realize that as I shape up, the curve cannot be as drastic.  Not because I plan on getting back to old habits.

I know you’re here really just to see photos and not read my horrible English so here you go… an image from Lisa and Phil’s session.  I probably wouldn’t have been able to make this image if I was in worse shape than I am right now ;).  Their wedding is coming up very soon…just imagine the awesome images we’ll make since I’m so fleet footed now eh! ;)

Shelley - good job TLAW!!!!August 26, 2011 – 10:55 am

Kevan - Nice work! And you’re not signing up for that bike race why exactly?August 25, 2011 – 8:54 pm

Back on the bus

Years ago back in University I was a health and fitness nut.  I’d hit the gym no less than 5 days a week lifting weights, doing stairs and running lap after boring lap.  I despised riding the bike – it hurt my butt too much.

Then after I graduated, I just stopped going.  No real reason why other than I found it inconvenient since I couldn’t just walk across the campus and hit the gym.  Now I had to pay a gym a monthly fee and drive there every day after a full day of work.  And quite frankly this interrupted my social life. Boorrrring.

I’ve lamented the fact that I gave up working out for years, watching my body take a slow decline to “woah, that ain’t cool” levels.  My sporting ability took a hit too.  I could no longer jump as high, swing as hard, lift as much and my endurance was the pits.  So while wallowing in self-pity I forced myself to pay the fees and make the drive to the gym.  No excuses right? And for another 3 years I was back on track and I felt fantastic.

And then I got married.  And once again the wheels fell off.  Now I’m not blaming my marriage for causing me to quit the fitness regimen, but there was this part of me that said “hey, you’ve found the person you’re spending the rest of your life with, whats with all this extra effort to look good?  Goal achieved. Go eat a pizza”.  The wheels fell off once again for 3 years.

This week, I just signed up at the gym again and I’m doing something I’ve never ever done before.  I’ve hired a personal trainer to help me achieve exact goals in mind.  These goals are to reduce my body fat % down to 12% and to gain 10lbs of lean muscle.  I’m not as concerned about my actual weight as that would only be a fitness indicator if I were only looking to lose weight.  Since I’m looking to add much more muscle I know that my weight should stay relatively static.  I have a 3 month timeline to achieve this goal – which makes it just in time for the big wedding season rush.  And in-line with this goal, I’m expecting this to make me much more nimble and even more energetic for all the beautiful weddings that I’m lucky to have been commissioned to photograph.   I’ve also been told that accountability is key, so here I am telling my faithful blog followers that I’m as committed as ever to reach my goal.  This will be key to keeping me honest.

Day one of the my fitness regimen went ultra good.  My trainer told me I need to eat more. MORE. Not less. Is it too early to declare my love for her?

Brussels Belgium

What? you expected a “before” photo?  Please, no need to lose your breakfast/lunch/dinner over my desire to thrash my body into better shape…  Actually, this is a picture that I took when I lived in Brussels, Belgium.  This photo was one of the reasons I started my love and career of all things photography.  I believe this was an open air elevator shaft near the Justice House (court) near where I was living at the time.  This was take with a simple 2MB point-and-shoot camera at night.

Caribbean Cruise 2011: Falmouth, Jamaica

One of the ports we stopped into was Falmouth, Jamaica.  A small developing port town between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.  We tried to book an early morning excursion off to just cruise around the area but after waiting for over an hour the bus never showed up.  That was a complete blessing.  I ended up asking one of the tourism ladies where a good place to go for lunch would be.  I wanted her to be clear that I didn’t want no trumped up tourism food (Jamaican Jerk Chicken KFC what?!).  I needed the real deal… tell me where YOU go to eat and tell me what you order and I’ll order the exact same thing.  She just looked at me like I was some crazy tourist with some freaky weird hat on.  She was right, I was some crazy tourist with a freaky weird hat but I still needed food.  Good food. Good Jamaican food.  She checked with Terra to make sure I wasn’t smoking some of the local delicacy before she whipped out a map and said “if you’re sure, then this is where I go… it’s called Peppers, but it ain’t pretty”.  Music to my ears.  So, what to order? Jerk chicken, jerk pork, bammy (a really dense flatbread) and sweet potato.  And of course, you never ever forget the Red Stripe.  And since it was 34 degrees Celcius…lots of Red Stripe.

So we wandered our way through the poorly labeled streets of Falmouth until we found it.  A shack with a corrugated tin roof and no tables, just an old wood bar a girl working behind said bar, and 2 men the working in the 50 degree kitchen amidst the sickly sweet stench of the local blend of Mary Jane.  Jackpot.  My saliva glands created an instant waterfall.   A place that looked like this had to serve some incredible street food.  And it did not disappoint. Jerk chicken? The BEST I’d ever had. Tender, juicy, jerky.  Pork? No man should ever live without roast port. Bammy?  As dense as advertised.  And simple as it should be.  Sweet potato? deep fried deliciousness.  All of this, of course, accompanied by the most ridiculous house made hot sauce ever.  If I could I’d have smuggled that coke bottle of sauce back with me if it wasn’t for the security search that took place to get back on the boat.

We sat at that shack called Peppers for 3 hours engaging a local taxi driver, who took today off as he just left court after fighting a driving ticket he received, about the history of Falmouth.    A slowly developing town thanks to being a newly minted cruise port.  Once a town run by the slave trade and property prospectors that suddenly lost the interest of investors due to the rise of more popular resort towns like Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.  One of his daughter’s came to visit him.  An adorable little girl of 16 months.  He has 5 kids in total, by 3 women.  We bought him a “half-Q” of rum and we became friends.  This was one of the highlights of this trip.  Being able to learn and explore on my own.  Not being touristed. Not being told where to go.  I kinda feel that eating real local cuisine / street food is one of the absolute best ways to experience a new culture.  The locals you meet will tell it like it is.  The good and the bad.  And you don’t leave with some silly fridge magnet that says “Ya Mon!”
