And the Winner is….

Charities across the country!  You all made this one of the most impossible tasks that I’ve ever ever ever had to take on and which is why it took me so long to choose a fantastic charity.  And you know what was even more awesome was that there was no replication of charities that were submitted.  Each and every single entry was unique!  At times, I felt as though I should just divide up the money and donate to all of the charities submitted, but alas, that wasn’t part of the rules of the game and I’ve been forced to make a crazy difficult choice.  Who knew giving away money would be so tough!   So it is with extreme happiness that through our panel of expert judges (4 of us in total) we narrowed it down to 3. Then 2. Then 1.  Congratulations to the lucky couple who gave me reason to donate to Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Shelter!  Heaven Can Wait provides shelter, care and nourishment to abandoned, abused and homeless domestic animals. This includes altering of the animals, providing vaccinations and tattoo addition to identification and treatment of any other health issues.

I’ll be in touch with each and every one of the entrants to thank-you for the time you took to write in and for the enthusiasm with which you gave.  I’ve learned plenty of wonderful new things and learned about many new amazing organizations in our that I would love to contribute to one day.

I’ve been told that blog posts are always more appealing when there’s something visual and not just blah blah blah, so here you go…a wedding that I played 2nd shooter to for the talented Brittany Esther

Dhara & Jason: A Couple’s Session

Hey look, yet another single image from a session that I recently shot…this is getting ridiculous so I’ll have to make it up to myself by doing a full blog post one of these days.  But first, here’s a sneak peek at Dhara and Jason’s session.  Love the colors, but I love the love even more…

Also, I wanted to remind all those who are reading this that my contest is still active.  In a nutshell:

1. Donating is sexy
2. I’ve got money to donate
3. Please help me pick a charity
4. You win a free couple’s session with me.

The largeprint:
To enter please email me at: terence [at] tlawphotography [dot] ca (or you can use my contact form) with the following information :

1. Who you are and how you met
2. Why you’d like to win this free 2 hr session
3. What charity you’d like to see the proceeds donated to and why is this charity important? (This part is very important)
4. Please join/like my Facebook fanpage

The smallprint:
The contest closes at 11:59pm on November 20, 2010 and the winner announced on Monday November 22, 2010.  Any submissions after this time will not be accepted.  Sessions must take place within Calgary, Alberta or 30 min drive from Calgary, Alberta (unless you wanna cover my travel cost to go where you are I’m cool with that too – hello to any readers in Jamaica!!).  The session must take place within 6 months of the winner’s name being announced (short deadlines suck). Winners will be selected by myself and my assistant based on the submission that best exemplifies the spirit of charity, love, honestly, warmth and giving.

Dhara - This is awesome!!! I love it. I have been checking out your website everyday, pretty much every hour!! :)November 8, 2010 – 12:03 pm

Giving

I’ve always been a massive proponent of lending a hand.  I’ve probably started no less than 3 blog posts with that a similar sentence over the years and each time I say it, it just helps to reaffirm that belief.  This year is no different.  I’ve been fortunate that my life has been filled with opportunity, love, health, and a network of amazing friends and family.   As such, I’ve always tried to open my heart to others who may need a hand, whether its by helping them to achieve goals, or to provide a mentor to those wish to have one.  I’ve always donated my time as a photographer to many charitable causes for auction, donation of time or through my clients.

This year, I’m looking to go in a different direction and I’m opening up this charitable season as a contest to any and all couple’s (Any combination of 2 adults) out there.  I know there are a ton of charitable organizations out there that don’t get the proper recognition and this is a way to really learn about them.

So here’s the deal, over the past year, I’ve saved up a certain dollar amount (is the amount something I should disclose?) that I’d like to donate to a charity of YOUR choice.  In exchange, I’ll offer up my time for a 2hr couples session at no charge to you (an $800 value).  Having said that, if you feel so inclined to pay me, you should know that the money you do give me goes straight towards whatever charity we’ve chosen to donate to.   So now you’re asking yourself, “so wait a sec…you’re gonna donate your hard earned money to a charity of my choice and you’ll do a free session for the two of us?! What do you stand to gain?! What’s the catch??”.  The catch is that there is no catch.  I’ve never done charitable work with the expectation that I will personally gain from it (though volunteering as a Big Brother has definitely taught me so much more about myself than I ever would have imagined), or that I’ll suddenly win $500,000 (though having purchased a raffle ticket for the 4Kids Lottery may improve my chances of this happening).  I stand to gain a smile, a warm hug and hopefully a thank-you.  Ok, I lied a little…maybe I’ll gain more traffic to my website.  And if nothing else, by asking you to look into your favourite charity, I gain the knowledge that you’ve learned just a bit more about a worthy cause (Wow! It’s pretty high up here on this horse ain’t it!!).

Cake & Pictures

Recently I was invited to join an amazing network of international wedding photographers on Cake & Pictures.  To be included as part of this group is a crazy-rad and most definitely a humbling honor and something that I’m extremely thrilled about.   Yeah, I know, I didn’t win the title of World’s Awesomest Wedding Photographer but that’s not gonna stop me from being stoked about it.   I’m not the type to name drop but to see my name next to some of our industry’s most creative and respected photographers means a lot to me, and ultimately, tells me that, hey, I guess I’m doing something right!

I’m not all for accolades and high-fives as ultimately my goal is to do my best to please my amazing clients; but I can’t help but turn a shade of awesome-red.  So thank-you to Cake & Pictures for allowing me to be part of your network!

To get a better idea of what Cake & Pictures is all about give ‘em a click and take a look!

Now accepting applications for a 2nd shooter / assistant

Helloooo faithful blog readers, or reader if there if I’ve mistakenly assumed there is more than the singular.

I’m looking to hire another assistant!  Things have been picking up and yes, I can finally admit the truth… I need more help! The ideal candidate should have similar qualities to me, and that includes:

MUST be a people person and MUST enjoy interacting with people.
- a DSLR camera (I don’t care if you shoot with a Nikon or Canon, but if you care I’m a Canon)
- you own a lens or 6
- outgoing and not afraid to take charge
- a sense of humor
- a twisted sense of humor
- good fashion sense
- a sense of personal hygiene
- is willing and able to carry camera bags and lighting equipment
- has their own vehicle because taking the bus ain’t gonna cut it
- has camera skills and is willing to learn
- willing to step outside their comfort zone and the want to try something new and create something amazing

If this is something that you’re interested in please send an email to terence [at] tlaw [dot] ca

its tlaw at work!
