Courtney & Steve: Wedding at the Ranche

This is a story of Courtney and Steve.  Steve loves Courtney.  Courtney loves Steve.  They dated.  They fell madly in love.  Then planned the wedding of the year.  Then they got married at The Ranche in Calgary to prove just how madly in love they were with each other.  They shed a few tears.  Shared their hearts with each other (one of the best vow exchanges ever…for serious).  They had friends and family celebrate with them.   The rocked the country music and filled the dance floor with happy feet and smiling faces.   They brought in the Perogy Boyz to serve traditional Ukrainian perogies and bratwurst.  It was ultra rad!  And they had gorgeous wedding photos taken to document it all (duh!).  They went on their honeymoon and came back fresh and ready to face the world as a new family.

Thank you Courtney and Steve for sharing so much of your amazing day with me.  You made my job so much fun and so easy that day.  The best part of any wedding is seeing the excitement and the sincere raw emotions that fill the day, and there was no shortage of that on your day.  The best part about this day was that everyone in the wedding party just made the day so relaxed and FUN! The way a wedding celebration should be!  Courtney especially had me busting my abs when we had to stop taking photos a number of times so that she could jump up and down and scream “THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER!!!!” and grab Steve to give him a bear hug and a kiss.   I took that as my cue to blog only the images that had a story to tell, an emotion to evoke.  As beautiful as all the details were, I thought the best way to do this wedding justice was to take the emotions that Courtney and Steve had for each other, and their love of friends and family, and create an entire post that would help them relive the day.

Before I forget, I have to give a nod to the choice of song for the first dance.  What a killer and refreshing surprise to see those two dance their hearts out to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s – Fishin’ in the Dark.  I could listen to that song all day and not get sick of it.   And while we’re at it, I think fishin’ in the dark is really a fun euphemism.  That is all.

Oh, and one more thing..thank you both for the super sweet phone call I received when you returned from your honeymoon…you seriously put the biggest grin on my face (my wife said I sounded like a teenage girl on the phone with a guy I really really really really really really liked…odd).  Anyways, I wish I recorded everything you said because it truly made my year.

Now love the photos below you crazy kids!!!

Donna & Truong: a blog of beautiful moments. and a couple of details

Donna and Truong have been unlike any other couple I’ve ever photographed.  And that’s not a slight against my other couples at all, in fact, I quite often befriend many of my clients as a result of the amazing relationships we build along the way towards their wedding day.  But Donna and Truong really went out of their way to bring me in to their lives, and their families.   They brought us gifts when they found out that we gave birth to our beautiful baby girl.  They invited me to Superbowl parties (I’m coming next year!) and just to hang out.  I know what they like to drink at Starbucks.  Their wedding was the first time I ever got on the dance floor and got my Dougie on…it was super happy fun times!

The wedding was all about family, laughs, food, food, food, food, smiles, food and of course, crazy real moments.  Most times, the best wedding images are the simple ones, the smiles, the tears, those little looks they give each other throughout the day that says “damn, I got lucky today!”.

Donna & Truong, you two are extremely lucky.  You have each other, and there is no doubt how you two feel for each other.  It is intense and passionate and real.  You are two people that I can picture being friends with.  You are my type of people.  Love you guys!  I love that Donna doesn’t stop smiling…you can’t possibly be in a bad mood around her.  She just has to smile and you’re all good.  Truong, if you were a ghost they’d call you Casper.  Truly the friendliest dude you’ll ever meet.  I love that he acts like he owes you the world…right after he’s done you a favor!

I stood in line for a massage.  I got shot down.

Aww yeah..roast pork!!

Bartering for the bride has to be one of the most vicious and cruel things a brides friends and family can do to the groom.  Luckily they went easy on Truong

Truong and Grandma.  This image just kills me and puts a lump in my throat.

Courtney & Steve: engagement photographs in downtown Calgary

Courtney and Steve are swearing fealty (I’ve been watching and reading too much Game of Thrones) to one another this upcoming weekend.  We made some pretty pictures of these pretty people.  Then I posted them here to show them off and make them famous.  Thank you for making the engagement session so much fun for me and allowing me to walk you all over downtown Calgary just to get “the shot”.    You two are incredibly fun, happy, and clearly in love (awwwwwww).  I’m doing jumping jacks to get ready for your awesome wedding day!  We’re gonna make awesome happen!  Now tell me, aren’t you glad you found the time out of your ridonkulously crazy schedules and spend a couple of hours for your engagement photos?  The correct answer is yes.

Note: This isn’t how I normally edited images, but I wanted to play around with some new editing presets.  Explanation at the end of the beautiful images of beautiful people (aka Courtney and Steve’s engagement photos).  I’ll be providing you two with two sets of images.  One set will look like the below, and the other set will be with my natural edits.

For Photographers: This was the first time that I decided to give the much talked about VSCO film presets a try.  I’ve had them since they first came out but never used them before as I just didn’t think it was going to be “my style” (yes, I buy things that I don’t use).  So a few months pass by and they start to go rotten (as far as rotten LR presets go).  Anyways, I’ve finally forced myself to give them a try and I gave them a run straight out of the box.  No changes to the presets at all, just click-and-go.  And frankly, I hated it.  My images looked muddy and the blacks and shadows looked like they were being crushed under the foot of a giant.  I couldn’t imagine using them straight out of the box, but that’s ok as I don’t think the intention is to use them like that…I mean, how many people would have the exact same processed images if they did?  That’s just silly (!).  So instead, I played around with the color settings, adjust the blacks, shadows, highlights and and whites until I got something that I felt more comfortable with.  Now, these images still produced the film feel as intended so I’ve stayed true to the intent of the presets and the folks over at VSCO.  I’ve just “cleaned” it up to be more my taste.  I’m not sure if this will be the last time I use the presets, but I definitely want to stay true to my own way of editing, which is what my clients expect from me.  Although I’m happy enough with the results of using VSCO with my changes applied to the images, I won’t be relying on these 100% for my wedding photos and engagement photos going forward.  For that, I’ll rely on my own presets that I’ve put together.  But here’s my biggest beef with using VSCO presets…it’s that everyone and their dogs dogs dogs dog is now using them.  It’s hard to come across a photographers website these days where there isn’t a VSCO preset that has been applied to it.  What you get a bunch of images edited the same way.   The tools that are provided are fantastic, but when we all start to look the same…well, you know the saying.  I guess I should also disclose that there are a few images up there that aren’t VSCO edited.  It was hard for me to rely solely on the presets themselves for an entire session.

Christina & Geoff: An American Wedding in Canada-land

This wedding was a glamorous one from start to finish, and I was fortunate to get to shoot this one alongside my friend Paul from PMG Image – fortunately, he didn’t ask me to hold his lights or reflectors – he basically said “shoot it the way you want to”.  And shoot I did…there’s one thing I love about second shooting, and that is, no responsibility!  As odd as it sounds – it allows me to focus on trying a new and different technique, one that I may not have otherwise tried on my own, and not have to worry about it going wrong since I’ll know that a pro like Paul is going to get the shot.

If you’re an NFL fan, then you may recognize the groom, Geoff Hangartner as the starting Guard for the Carolina Panthers.  This dude one is one bear of a man.  I think his official statistics have him at 6’5″ and over 300lbs.   Have you ever tried to make a bear laugh for photos?  It’s as intimidating as it sounds.

The bride. Christina. Oh my the bride…are there words to describe how beautiful of a person she really is?  You know when people talk about a smile that lights of the room?  They were talking about Christina, only hers doesn’t light up a room.  It lights up the entire Banff Springs Hotel.  She looked absolutely jaw-dropping in her Lazaro gown and it couldn’t have been a better dress for her (she had considered a Pnina Tornai but chose to go with the less audacious and less revealing Lazaro….a perfect choice!).
